Clary Fray is the Shadowhunter daughter of Jocelyn Fray and notorious Circle leader Valentine Morgenstern. For years, Clary lived a mundane life with Jocelyn until Valentine was discovered to be alive, throwing their lives out of balance as Clary finds herself in a journey with fellow Shadowhunters to save her mother.Subject to her father's experiments, Clary was unwittingly given the ability to create either new runes or old ones, so ancient that they are runes of Heaven or simply not written in the Gray Book, because of the extra angel blood running through her veins.
Jace Lightwood/Herondale:
Jace Lightwood is one of the best Shadowhunters of his time, currently residing in the New York Institute. Raised by Valentine Morgenstern, Jace was revealed to be the biological son of the late Celine and Stephen Herondale.
Simon Lewis:
Simon Lewis is Clary's best friend. A mundane when they were originally introduced to the Shadow World, Simon has since been turned into a vampire and is now a Daylighter, a vampire that can walk in the daylight.
Isabelle lightwood:
Isabelle at first shares the Lightwood family's snobbish attitude toward mundanes and Downworlders. However, after meeting Clary and Simon, her attitude towards mundanes begins to change as she befriends them and forms a romantic relationship with Simon. Her distressed reaction when Simon was temporarily transformed into a rat, indicated the superficial relationship she intended to have with Simon would not be easily achieved. Despite maintaining a haughty attitude towards Clary and mundanes, she is seen to be somewhat affected by Clary's words at certain points in the book, suggesting she is not as cold-hearted as she allows others to believe.
alec lightwood:
Alexander "Alec" Gideon Lightwood is a Shadowhunter and the eldest of the Lightwood children.
alec is one of the few gay shadowhunters. Since homosexual Shadowhunters are normally shunned out of the Clave, Alec was skeptical about coming out, but he eventually does, letting everyone know of his relationship with Magnus Bane, inspiring other teenage closeted Shadowhunters to come out about their sexuality, as well.
jocelyn fray:
Jocelyn Fray is the mother of Clary Fray and Jonathan Morgenstern and the wife of Luke Garroway. Previously, she was the wife of Valentine Morgenstern.Jocelyn was originally an active Shadowhunter and a member of the Circle with her husband, but after discovering her husband's heinous and cruel acts, she abandoned the cause and became a key orchestrator against the Uprising. Jocelyn escaped the life of Shadowhunters to live a safe mundane life in New York with her daughter.
