Hazel has no siblings and is the daughter to Mr. Lancaster and Mrs. Lancaster, friend of Isaac and girlfriend of Augustus Waters. Hazel finished high school early and has already begun pursuing a college education. She is diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs, but has managed to live with her disease owing to doses of an experimental drug called Phalanxifor (which does not exist outside of the book).
Augustus Waters
Augustus Waters is a main character in The Fault in Our Stars. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had to amputate his leg and was NEC for 14 months when he first met Hazel Grace Lancaster. He dies shortly after his trip to Amsterdam with Hazel Lancaster on July 2, 2012, from a recurrence of cancer. He was also the best friend of Isaac and later Hazel's boyfriend and only love. Augustus is described as being tall, very attractive, intelligent and having mahogany colored hair. He fears oblivion as he wants to make a mark on the world and hates the idea of not being able to leave a mark at all as he is diagnosed with cancer. Augustus knew Isaac before the Support Group, the single and sole reason he was there was because he wanted to support Isaac, before undergoing surgery and going blind. Augustus Waters is a big believer in metaphor; he is constantly symbolizing the situations at hand. One example is his love of not smoking: "Its a metaphor, see: you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing".
Isaac
Isaac is one of the supporting characters of The Fault in Our Stars. He had eye cancer and one glass eye and one real eye, then the other real eye was removed and he is NEC. He and Augustus are best friends, and through him Augustus befriends Hazel. He was previously in a relationship with Monica, until she broke up with him upon hearing he would go blind. Isaac is known to like video games and has a wide sense of humor.
After undergoing surgery, Hazel visits him and he jokes, "Come over here so I can examine your face with my hands and see deeper into your soul than a sighted person ever could'".
